Opened on the 4th of August 1996 by Drs Mario and Brigitte Ng Kuet Leong, the St Esprit Clinic has established itself as the most modern outpatient care centre specialised in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, which has been instrumental in introducing new medical technologies and higher standards of care in Mauritius. The use of an intravaginal probe for pelvic ultrasound examinations, colposcopy for the identification of cervical lesions, breast ultrasound examinations, antepartum cardiotocographic fetal monitoring, laparoscopic surgery and hysteroscopy and a program of detection of gynaecological cancers are among the many innovations brought in the field to better care for the modern Mauritian woman.

The St Esprit Clinic has a fully equipped operation theatre, where surgery can be carried out in safety. The first cases of IVF were performed in June 1997. Nine months later the first IVF babies, a set of twins, were born. Our small state of the art laboratory enables us to offer a "one stop shop" service.

Dr Jean Marie Verrougstraete, our embryologist, is a French national who founded the Assisted Reproductive Technology Centre in 1986 in Le Port, Réunion Island. The latter is rated among the best in France. The first IVF performed by Dr Verrougstraete's team was on the 19 August 1986. With the opening of the St Esprit Clinic in 1996 and the collaboration of Dr Verrougstraete's team, the setting up of BIO-LIFE, the first Assisted Reproductive Technology Centre in Mauritius, became a reality.

Dr Mario Ng Kuet Leong, a Mauritian, is a Canadian trained obstetrician-gynaecologist with over 25 years experience of practice in Canada, USA, Germany and Mauritius. He was the owner and director of the "Tagesklinik Dr Ng" in Kassel, Germany before returning to his homeland in 1996. He was part of the team that started the IVF program in Toronto in the early 80's. Between 1988 and 1992 he was the acting consultant of the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology of the "Frauenklinik Dr Koch" in Kassel, Germany.

Dr Guy Baroche, obstetrician-gynaecologist specialist of IVF, is the special adviser of  BIO-LIFE CENTRE. He is the co-founder and Gynaecologist in charge of the IVF Centre in Réunion Island, a French overseas department in the Indian Ocean.
